Wonderful news! You’re a parent! Now begins your long and illustrious career as a caretaker. You have much to think about. Take healthcare for instance. Beyond taking a new baby to the pediatrician for regular developmental check-ups, it will soon be time to find a pediatric dentist. Before that time arrives, there are some things you can do make sure your child’s teeth and mouth is healthy.

You can start by taking care of your baby’s gums. This means cleaning them after each feeding with a clean piece of cloth or sterile gauze. Make sure that her pacifiers and bottles are clean, and only put water, milk or formula in her bottle. When your baby starts teething you can use a chilled spoon or teething ring to relieve her pain. You can also talk with the dentist about other options. The first dental visit should occur within six months of your child’s first tooth and before her first birthday. You can start brushing her teeth with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny amount of toothpaste.

If it is time for your child’s first dental visit, you can make an appointment to see our dentist, Dr. William D. Steinhauer. To make an appointment at Dentistry for Children in San Antonio, Texas, call 210-432-1510.
